The Igbo People

The Igbo People have a chequered history. That history will be rolled out in bits for better comprehension.

 

The Igbo Institute believes that Igbo People must create the necessary awareness so that all people of the world may know and understand that the Igbo People.

It must be understood that the Igbo People have their ancestry in the geographic area that was referred to as the Eastern Region of Nigeria. The Igbo people existed in that rain forest expanse since about 2000 B.C.
They have two major neighbors centuries before the creation of Nigeria in 1914. Ther, the Yoruba and Hausa.
The Yoruba people report their history back to 1500 A.D. (circa).
The Hausa people report their history back to 500 A.D. (circa).

When we say, ‘culture’, we begin the interpretation from language. Language is the first proof of who we are. The Igbo in us starts with the language we speak. Are you Igbo? What makes you Igbo? Do you think Igbo? Do you feel Igbo? On the other hand, are you ashamed of your Igbo heritage? Have you taken the time to understand the antecedents of the Igbo People? Start with your Igbo Language. Know also that the Igbo Language has dialectal differences. When you speak in your dialect, the person standing next to you can tell what part of Igboland you come from. The Igbo Institute will be bringing you materials and resources pertaining to the general Igbo Language (commonly known as ‘Union Igbo) and the different dialects of the Igbo Language. Show interest in your native tongue. Otherwise, you may be drowned and forgotten.
